Professional Introduction

  • General Practice/Family Medicine originated in 18th-century Europe and America, formally established in the US in the 1960s. It has since flourished globally, developing a unique disciplinary system integrating clinical medicine, preventive medicine, rehabilitation medicine, and humanities/social sciences.

  • Introduced to mainland China in the mid-1980s; formally established as a discipline in 1993 with the founding of the CMA General Practice Branch.

  • Driven by economic growth, population aging, evolving disease patterns, and healthcare reform, China highly prioritizes General Practice development.

    • State Council Document No. 23 [2011] outlined long-term and transitional GP training models.

    • National Health Commission Document No. 21 [2018] emphasized the purpose, principles, requirements, and core functions of establishing independent General Practice Departments in tertiary hospitals, elevating their importance. It explicitly states: "The Department of General Practice is a primary clinical department," aiming to "establish a vibrant GP system by 2020."

  • Core Characteristic: Emphasizes longitudinal, person-centered care.

  • Distinctive Feature: Provides "Whole-Person, Continuous, Comprehensive Care." GPs consistently embody this principle.

  • Technical Approach: GPs utilize communication skills to build collaborative partnerships with patients/families, jointly developing effective, feasible, integrated prevention-treatment plans combining:

    • Rational, personalized investigations

    • Pharmacotherapy

    • Physician-patient communication interventions

    • Daily lifestyle/behavioral interventions
