From Chinese Original Insight to Global Paradigm

The academic conference commemorating the 20th anniversary of Precision Surgery kicked off at the Main Building of Tsinghua University on May 30. Hosted by the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Committee of Chinese Research Hospital Association and co-organized by the School of Clinical Medicine, Tsinghua University and Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, the event was attended by Bai Benfeng, Deputy Party Secretary and Vice President of Tsinghua University, He Zhenxi, President of Chinese Research Hospital Association, and other distinguished guests. Academician Dong Jiahong, Dean of SCM and President of Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, presided over the conference.
First proposed by Academician Dong Jiahong in 2006, the Precision Surgery philosophy transcends incremental technical improvement; it redefines the intrinsic essence of surgery, core value orientation and fundamental mission of medicine. Centered on shifting from technical precision to optimal therapeutic value, the discipline adheres to medicine’s people-centered original aspiration by delivering minimal surgical trauma, maximal preservation of organ function and optimized long-term survival outcomes for patients.
In his address, Bai Benfeng cited Precision Surgery as an exemplary achievement forged through interdisciplinary integration and innovation. Leveraging its comprehensive disciplinary strengths, Tsinghua University will sustain the upgrading of Precise Surgery toward intelligence and engineering-driven development, facilitate high-level self-reliance and strength in China’s medical science and technology, and export more Chinese standards and solutions worldwide.
He Zhenxi remarked that Precision Surgery stands as an iconic indigenous innovation from China’s medical sector that steers global surgical advancement. Aligned closely with the Healthy China Initiative and the development roadmap for research-oriented hospitals, it has evolved into a universally acknowledged clinical paradigm across the international surgical community.
Pierre-Alain Clavien, Member of the National Academy of Medicine (USA), President of the European Surgical Association and Professor at the University of Zurich, noted that Precision Surgery has triggered a revolutionary shift in surgical thinking, transforming conventional experience-based surgery into scientifically informed, precisely controllable clinical practice.
Delivering a video speech, Henri Bismuth, Founding President of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and European Surgical Association, and Emeritus Professor at the University of Paris, commented that the maturation of Precision Surgery showcases the originality and global leadership capacity of China’s homegrown medical theories to the world.
Fang Yuman, Chair of the Department of Surgery at City of Hope National Medical Center (USA), stated that by prioritizing patient-centric benefits, Precision Surgery has fundamentally restructured the objectives and modalities of surgical treatment.
Academician Chen Zaolong, Honorary Superintendent of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (Kaohsiung), voiced anticipation for further progress of Precision Surgery toward heightened minimally invasiveness, intelligentization and personalized treatment powered by emerging technologies.
The inauguration of the Academy of Precise Digestive Surgery and the official launch of Collected Papers on the 20th Anniversary of Precision Surgery took place during the opening ceremony.
The conference featured keynote presentations from 10 Members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, over 40 hospital presidents and more than 60 nationally recognized top-tier medical talents.
Between May 29 and 31, four thematic sub-forums namely Refined Practice: The Art of Precise Operation, Frontier Exploration: Wings of Precision, High-Quality Development of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, and Humanistic Care: The Bedrock of Precision, alongside the ACA live hepatobiliary surgery demonstration event, were successively convened.
